Frequently Asked Questions: Kenpo

Why do some Kenpo students wear a black gi (uniform)?
James Mitose started wearing a black gi when he began teaching Kosho Ryu Kempo in Hawii in 1937 so that people would be able to tell that it was not a 'traditional' Okinawan or Japanese martial art. Once a Kenpo student reaches purple belt, they are allowed to wear a black gi as a sign of their progress.

What are belt tests?
A belt test is a formal review of everything a student has learned to progress to their current rank. If they have properly learned the required techniques, they can advance to the next rank. For rank requirements, click on a belt on the rank board. For Brown and Black Belt requirements, please make inquires in person.

How long does it take to reach Black Belt in your style?
Achieving the rank of Black Belt is a personal endeavor that requires diligence and commitment, and the time it takes depends on the individual effort and skill of the student. For students with no prior martial arts experience, 4-6 years of study is an average length of time. Click the icon to the right to view a list of Black Belt Students!
